MCAT Pipeline - 2010 Winter - Cover

Winter 2010

ON THE COVER: President’s Message: Record Attendance at Annual Luncheon
By VINCE DI GAETANO, MCA Toronto President
The Winter season smiled upon us this year and once again provided members with an opportunity to meet and greet friends and customers. MCA Toronto started off the year with our annual Industry Luncheon held on Wed. Jan. 13, 2010 at the Crystal Fountain Banquet Hall in Markham. Mr. Derek Edwards was fantastic entertaining the record crowd. The New Year was unfolding the same as other years until that point, but what followed was somewhat surprising. The work that usually develops after mid-January did not arrive. And, as we are preparing the Pipeline for the CMX show on Mar. 25 to 27, 2010, the quantity of work still hasn’t shown any growth to speak of. Read more...

ON THE COVER: President’s Message: New Chapter Unfolds at MCAT
By VINCE DI GAETANO, MCA Toronto President
It was my honour and priviledge to accept the position of President of MCA Toronto on Sep. 19, 2009 during the MCA Toronto Annual General Meeting held at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville. I have always taken pride in being involved in the activities of MCA Toronto, and have enjoyed serving on the standing committees as well as the Board of Governors. I was very pleased to greet so many ‘first-timers’ to the 2009 Annual General Meeting. I believe all attendees had a very enjoyable weekend. We had 60 golfers hit the links on Friday morning including the President-Elect of MCA America Mr. Bob Armistead from Waldwick, New Jersey. On Friday evening our group had Mr. Bill Carr conduct a fitting tribute of Past President Mr. Don Capotosto. Read more...

ON THE COVER: Changes to the Construction Safety Association of Ontario
Ontario to recognize the system of health and safety associations
The Construction Safety Association of Ontario (CSAO) will be changed over the next year as Ontario reorganizes the 12 health and safety associations (HSAs) in the province. In 2008, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) embarked on the five-year Road to Zero strategy. It aims to reduce lost-time injuries by seven per cent across Ontario each year, for an overall reduction of 35 per cent by the end of 2012. Later in 2008, the Occupational Health and Safety Council of Ontario – which gathers representatives from the WSIB, the Ministry of Labour, and the HSAs – launched a roles review of Ontario’s HSAs. The purpose was to explore how they could be realigned to achieve the objectives of the Road to Zero. The review concluded that the health and safety system has achieved major successes over the years, but faces many challenges that cannot be met under the current arrangements. The review recommended more integrated, collaborative, streamlined, and focused HSAs that expand their frontline operations (more field consultants directly helping workplaces prevent injury and illness).

Winter 2009

ON THE COVER: ON THE COVER: President's Message
Uncertain Times.
This Winter is turning out to be one like no other before. We wait with cautious optimism as the buyers of construction secure their financial commitments for future projects. As I draft this report in early February, MCA Toronto Contractors have work lined-up for 2009, but the future appears to be uncertain. For now we must look beyond the doom and gloom we are bombarded with daily in the media, and wait patiently for new life to be returned to the economy.

ON THE COVER:  Victaulic Company
Piping. Systems. Solutions.

Victaulic, the world leader in mechanical pipe joining systems, was founded in New York City in 1925 to market a radical new concept in the piping industry — a mechanical bolted coupling that would engage into grooves and use a gasket seal. The concept of joining pipe with bolted mechanical couplings originated during World War I for rapid deployment of fuel and water to Allied forces. The company that worked closely with the War Department of England to develop this new method of joining pipe was named Victory Pipe Joint Company after the coupling it had engineered — known as the "victory joint" from early military uses. Later, combining the words "Victory" and "Hydraulics" the name was shortened to Victaulic, and the company began to shift its focus to the commercial piping industry and market its new innovative method of joining pipe.   Read more..

ON THE COVER:  President’s Message
MCA Toronto Man-hours Reach All-Time High
By D. Capotosto, MCAT President, Gimco Ltd.

The MCAT man-hours are currently at an all time high. All areas of the Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) sector are experiencing a huge workload in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). As we begin the Budget Process for the 2008/2009 year, we believe the work load will remain strong for the remainder of 2008. And, with the amount of commercial towers coming out of the ground in the downtown core,  our contractors and workforce will certainly remain busy
